Disabilities Network of New York City

Award Recipients - 2008

Christina Curry & Edward McGibbon, Co-Founders

The Disabilities Network of New York City creates coalitions to build community, shape policy and expand opportunity so New Yorkers with physical, visual and hearing disabilities can fully participate in the life of the City.

The Disabilities Network includes more than 400 dues-paying members consisting of both organizations and individuals. Members vote annually to select issues and fashion winnable campaigns by which to chart the group’s progress. The current agenda looks to increase accessible, affordable housing and accessible transportation in the City. Other programs include quarterly Community Forums, a Network Listserv -- the first of its kind in the City -- that functions as the local disability community’s main vehicle for communication, the disTHIS! Film Series, which moves beyond stereotypes to showcase depictions of the disability experience, and a media advocacy project with Manhattan Neighborhood Network.
