Freedom Train Productions

Arts Recipients - 2008

Freedom Train Productions (FTP) promotes new political theater written by up-and-coming and established Black playwrights. The plays feature Black Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender “hero and shero” characters who challenge audiences to see character struggle from their perspective and, in doing so, confront the legacy of homophobia, transphobia, racism and sexism.

FTP’s centerpiece program selects emerging playwrights to develop and present new work. It provides the opportunity to learn the theater craft from experts and engage with community activists and others knowledgeable with the play’s themes. The program includes meetings with local and national playwrights, readings, feedback sessions, and rehearsals with a team of actors and directors. Upon completion, each playwright showcases his or her work at the Fire! New Play Festival presented in Brooklyn. The festival is open and free to the general public and features talk backs with the artists after each performance.
